The board's August information session included a look at the newest state accountability scores, an extensive discussion of bus transportation hubs, and reports on early literacy and math.

A majority of the board voted to approve the district recommendation to immediately close Paredes Middle School. The vote was 7-2, with Trustees de Urioste and Quintana voting against the closure. Paredes' amended Turnaround Plan now goes to the Texas Education Agency for approval.

The 2026-27 board year started early with the first of two special meetings called to consider Supt. Segura's proposal to close Paredes Middle School just weeks before classes begin. The July 28 information session was the trustees' first chance as a group to discuss the sequence of events leading to what Trustee Kauffman called a "shocking" recommendation.

After weeks of discussion, trustees passed a budget June 18 by a vote of 7-1-1. The measure bridges more than $200 million in shortfalls through job and benefits cuts, increased class sizes, less planning time for some teachers, fewer bus routes, and planned property sales.

Distressing budget news occupied the bulk of this information session, which also offered updates on the district's efforts to improve dual-language instruction and boost the number of high-schoolers meeting Texas Success Initiative requirements.

At a special meeting, the district unveiled its recommended budget for next year, offering its latest recommendations for how it plans to offset a $181 million deficit. The cuts are deep and sobering, and trustees had plenty to say about the proposal. Remember that the board will meet again for its usual information session on June 11. Another week brought us another budget work session. This one included more specifics on possible cuts for many departments and deeper detail on work done thus far on defining an academic baseline.

The district's initial pass at budget cut recommendations was the prime focus of this meeting, kicked off by a robust public comment period. And there's no rest for the weary: The board is slated to hold another budget work session on May 14, with a focus on baseline academics and potential policy changes.

February's board info session included a lot of important updates on finances and school improvement.
